Learning Outcomes Assessed:
1. Demonstrate a wide knowledge of quality and environmental
practices and their application in the workplace.
2. Plan, design, measure and propose amendments where required to
quality and environmental management systems and processes.
3. Apply the relevant Acts, Regulations and best practice to design and
implementation phases, with regard to the duties and responsibilities
the legislation places on respective parties.
4. Analyse working situations, develop and apply strategies which
ensure effective management of international codes of practice and
legislation.

Assignment Tasks
Prepare a report answering all of the following questions.
1. Explain the basic philosophy behind quality management systems,
including the contributions quality management pioneers.
(20 marks).
2. Provide an analysis of the main quality improvement tools that an
organisation may use to improve quality, including illustrations where
appropriate
(20 marks).
3. Describe the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 standard and
evaluate the application of these within organisations as an
appropriate quality management system (QMS)
(30 marks).
4. Explain what is meant by independent third party certification to the
ISO 9001:2015 standard and how organisations can become
certified. Your answer should include comments highlighting the
roles of UK statutory and professional organisations in the
certification process.
(20 marks).
5. Explain how an organisation can effectively manage product recalls.
(10 marks).

Assignment Format & Submission
The total word count should not exceed 2000 words (excluding titles,
reference list and appendices). Please state any assumptions you have
made. The assignment should be submitted on Blackboard by the midnight
of MARCH 20, 2020.
Referencing
Use the Harvard referencing system for both the in-text citations and the
reference list.
ISO references
Where required, reference should be made to ISO 9001:2015 and
ISO10393:2013.

Marking Criteria
This assessment is one of two assignments for the module and carries 50% of the
weighting for the module. To pass this module, a student must achieve a minimum
aggregate mark of 50% in the two assignments.

APPENDIX TO ASSIGNMENT BRIEF
Submission instructions- This assignment is to be submitted by the date and time specified
in the assessment notice. You must ensure that you keep a copy of what you submit. When
you submit your work, please note that it must be submitted via Turnitin only. You must
not, under any circumstances, hand it directly or e-mail it to your tutor or another member
of staff.
Feedback – The module tutor/assessor will normally provide you with generic feedback on any
formative or summative aspects of the assessment within 20 working days of the date of
submission. This may be either posted on a website, or sent to you electronically, or provided in a
class-based session.
Individual written feedback – will be provided via Turnitin which will address the extent to which
you have met the learning outcomes of the assignment and indicate the mark or grade attained in
accordance with the original marking criteria shown on the assignment brief. It will also provide
you with an indication of areas for improvement.
Deadlines – It is essential that you assist your tutor by complying with submission deadlines so
that you can benefit from the generic feedback process. Note that work offered for submission
within 10 working days after the date/time specified without an authorised extension will obtain a
maximum mark of 50% for that element of assessment. Work submitted after 5 working days of
the date/time specified will be awarded grade 0. The Dean or nominee is authorised to give
permission for one extension period of between 1 and 5 working days. (See Academic Regulation
G9)
Extenuating circumstances – If you are prevented from submitting work for reasons which could
not be disclosed prior to the required submission date/time eg. illness or accident you must use the
‘Extenuating Circumstances’ procedure so that your claim may be dealt with prior to the end of
year Assessment Board. Details of the procedure can be found in your Student Handbook and the
Students Guide to the Regulations.
Pass grades – in order to pass the module you need to pass the 2 elements of assessment with a
minimum aggregate mark of 50%. If you fail the module and subsequently obtain the required
50% mark after reassessment then the maximum mark for the module is 50%.
Retrieval – In certain cases you may be allowed to resubmit components of assignment work
which you have failed before the end of Semester 3. Retrieval will only be available for those
assignments which can be reassessed before the end of Semester 3. The maximum grade awarded
for resubmitted components of assignment work carried out under the retrieval system is 50%.
Plagiarism – Plagiarism is regarded by the University as a very serious offence. Please ensure that
you read the relevant academic regulations (G7) concerning what constitutes plagiarism and ensure
that what you submit as an individual or as a group is clearly all your own work and that the source
of any information or material is fully identified and properly acknowledged/referenced.
