Funding Health Education Programs – The Components of a Grant Proposal

Without financial resources, health education campaigns would be very difficult, if not impossible, to design, implement, and manage. Because most health education programs are funded through external grants – also known as soft money – it is necessary for health education professionals to develop skills in “grantsmanship.” As noted in your textbook, these skills include the ability to discover where the money is located, find out how to apply for the funds, and write grant proposals requesting financial sources to create and sustain health education programs. Create a sample grant proposal for a community program of your choice. Your proposal should include a sample budget sheet, and contain all of the following components:

  1. Title Page
  2. Executive Summary
  3. Table of Contents
  4. Introduction
  5. Background
  6. Description of proposed program
  7. Description of agency resources
  8. List of references
  9. Personnel section – indicate the type and quantity of staff you will need to successfully implement your program
  10. Budget

Your completed proposal should also address each of the following questions:

  • What do you want to do, how much will it cost, and how much time will it take?
  • What will be gained if this project is carried out?
  • How do you plan to do it?
  • What type of budget will you need?
  • How are you planning to manage your budget, your personnel, and your program?
  • How will the results be evaluated?

Please note that this assignment does not require you to create the full grant proposal itself – just identify and describe the components of the proposal as it relates to your health education program.

Your complete proposal should be 3-5 pages in length, and should adhere to APA guidelines.
