How would you develop the attitudes of all people who live in the area such toward better health sustainability of resources and political involvement?.
We are also learning about relationships; Attracting good ones and keeping them for the
long term. As it turns out traditional social cognition research done in the 70s-80s
might not pan out the same way if it were done today. Think about these questions in terms of the sexual revolution, era of the 60s-80s in comparison to the more Post-modern, social media
world of young Lovers today.
A. Analyze and discuss Article 23 in Lesko “Playing Hard to Get”. It focuses on
the conduct of women in relationships. Today how would this tactic work
if men are now more likely to also have to bargain and “bring something to
the table” in order to find suitable female (male) life partners. Should men
also play hard to get in some instances? Explain.
B. Analyze and discuss Article 24 Does a Long-Term Relationship Kill Romantic Love?
Use some of the reading material from Chapters 11 and 12 in your analysis.
In particular, think about how the actually Biology of Attraction and Love
Informs us about how to approach the idea of long term relationships. Discuss
how society, social media and market influences adjust to the biological
reality. Do we take this reality into account in the ways that we value or
dont value relationships?
In Chapter 7 we are thinking about attitudes and attitude change. We measure bias today using Implicit Bias games such as those on the Harvard Implicit Project Web-site. If you havent already entered some data into this site give it a try:
https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html
A. Discuss how the Implicit Bias games are scored using your response time to show
more or less implicit bias. What critical questions can you ask about this method?
The game has shown us a lot of bias, but do you think it is bias in the individual or
knowledge of the stereotype? Discuss what you think is the value of this kind of
task or game for improving our relationships with those we might see as somehow
different from ourselves? How is society doing today with changing biased behavior?
What would you do differently or what would you do more or less of to create
your idea of a less bias driven society?
B. Discuss some of the ways you would go about changing attitudes toward nutrition,
climate change, energy conservation and increasing political involvement in society
today. What kinds of changes do you see in the Boston area around you that you
find to be useful. How would you develop the attitudes of all people who live in the
area such toward better health, sustainability of resources and political involvement?
If you view neighborhoods in Boston as being Working, Middle, Wealthy and Low Income areas what would you do to improve environment, health and political attitudes
in each of the different areas?
