A‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍ugustine and Aquinas are perhaps the two most historically influential theologians in the Christian tradition. They both were saints, mystics, priests, and prolific writers who helped define the faith for centuries. Both believed reason and faith were compatible, and both offered up arguments for the existence of God. Given these similarities, their interpretations of the faith are quite different. Perhaps the differences between them lies in the fact that each of them uses a different philosophical system to supp‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍ort the faith. Explain how Augustine synthesizes Neoplatonism with Christianity, and how Aquinas combines theology with Aristotelianism. Discuss how their arguments for God’s existence proceed from different premises. Whose overall picture of human nature and religious worldview do you find preferable? Why? Explain. Or, do you think that reason and faith are not compatible?
