Summary/Response Essay

Summary/Response Essay

Summary/Response Essay, Please use this article to write this essay:https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/14/opinion/sunday/smartphone-addiction-teenagers-stress.html

For  this essay, you should select an article from the “Readings” folder in  this unit and summarize/respond to it in a formal essay. The  summary/response essay asks you first to summarize the main points of  the article and to respond to those points by agreeing, disagreeing, or  agreeing with some but not all of the arguments made in the article. You  should include evidence (from the article, from your own reasoning,  from examples, from experiences, etc.) to support your response.

Due Dates

Please refer to the calendar due dates. Please remember the peer review is a separate grade and has separate due dates.

Purpose and Learning Objectives

The  purpose of writing a response paper is to encourage you to read  actively and to evaluate the selected articles critically. While it is  possible to read an article just once and gain an understanding of the  main idea, much of the depth and nuance of the article will only be  discovered after multiple readings.  Moreover, your grasp of the ideas  and concepts presented in the article will remain superficial until you  apply those ideas and concepts in your own writing. As you write, you  should practice making clear claims about the material you’re writing  about and should practice supporting those claims with evidence from the  text and from your own reasoning about the subject.

Summary/Response Essay

Minimum Requirements

  • 600- 900 words  (approx. 2-3 pages)
  • An interesting and informative title
  • MLA format with in-text citations and works cited page
  • An introductory paragraph that tells readers what article you are responding to and that includes a thesis statement
  • One or more paragraphs that summarize the article
  • One or more paragraphs that respond to the article
  • A conclusion paragraph that wraps up the main ideas in the essay

You should not expect to earn a grade higher than a 60% if you do not meet the minimum requirements. Get Essay Writing Help Now

Process for Completion

  1. The  first step in writing a good response paper is to actively read the  article assigned. Active reading means consciously identifying the  thesis, purpose, audience, and tone.  It means determining what main  points the author is trying to convey with his or her article.
  2. Next,  it might help to construct an outline or graphic organizer that will  help you visualize the claims and the evidence supporting those claims.  Once you have a firm understanding of the article, start formulating  your response by asking questions:
    1. What do I really think about this topic? Why do I think that?
    2. Do I disagree with any points being made? Why?
    3. Do I agree with any points? Why?
    4. Can I think of additional examples or evidence that support or refute the author’s claims?
    5. Can I connect something in the article to my own personal experience?
    6. Can I apply the ideas presented in the article to some other subject?
  3. At  this point, you should start to formulate your response. Once you have  an idea of what you want to say, start drafting your essay.
    1. The introduction  should clearly identify the author and article you’re summarizing. It  may include a bit of brief summary to show what the main point of the  article is. It should include a thesis statement that presents your  response to the article.
    2. The body paragraphs  should begin with a summary of the article that you’ve chosen (one or  two paragraphs). Be sure to accurately represent the ideas and arguments  from the source. Next, you should develop your response (between one  and three paragraphs), usually with a statement of agreement  or disagreement, followed by your reasons, examples, and evidence.  Remember that the purpose of a response paper is to add your own voice  to the mix, to join the conversation.  I want to read your reactions,  your interpretations, and your opinions. Take this opportunity to  develop your own voice.
    3. The conclusion paragraph should reinforce the ideas you stated in the essay.
  4. Once  you’ve drafted your paper, go back and review how you’ve organized your  paragraphs (do they have topic sentences?) and integrated evidence (all  quotes should be seamlessly incorporated into your own sentences).
  5. When you’re happy with your draft, you should complete the peer review process to get feedback on your writing.
  6. After  you have read the feedback provided by your peers, continue revising  and editing your draft.  You might find that some comments are more  helpful than others. You are not obliged to take anyone’s advice, but  you should at least consider every suggestion. When you are comfortable  that the essay is in good shape, upload it to eCampus. The final draft  will automatically be sent through “Safe Assign,” which is an  originality checker used to help identify plagiarism.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is using someone else’s words or ideas without giving credit and is a serious academic offense.  It can range from:

  • Turning in a paper any part of which you did not write,
  • Cutting and pasting a paper together from various sources without attributing the sources correctly,
  • Changing a few words but basically keeping most of the words and sentence structure of the original,
  • Using the ideas of another without giving credit to the person who originally had the idea.
  • Using the exact words of the source without using quotation marks even if you give the name of the source.

Refer to the syllabus for consequences of plagiarism in this class. For more information, see http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/589/01/

War In Iran

War In Iran

War In Iran, American opinion has indeed shaped politic consequences, political interests, and policymaking.  Even with little or no interest in policymaking and politics, the assumption of democracy gives the citizens the power to freely air out their issues and give their opinion in matters of political concern. Taking the war in Iraq, it posed a significant economic and political imbalance. However, support from the politicians was negligible. And because a majority of the Americans opposed the war in Iran, they voted for a Democratic congressional candidate. Their opinion played a great deal in making concrete policies in response to the war in Iraq.

War In Iran

Public opinion is a reflection of the citizens’ view on how the government responds to national politics. Political actions are driven by the citizen’s opinion (Erikson, & Tedin, 2015). It sheds light on the outcomes of specific policies and helps the political candidates identify the characters demanded of them by the citizens. Political scholars argued that the perception of old public opinions was changed because of ambiguity and inaccuracy (Dür, 2019). Modern theories came to identify public opinion as either latent or a broad expression. Latent opinions are formed on the spot, while broad expressions are opinions that had earlier been formed and remained stable (Cantril, 2015).

When convincing policymakers, it proves difficult, interest groups may indirectly influence public opinion. They can achieve this through the media, holding rallies, or handing out leaflets to the public (Dür, 2019). Because the citizens have little or no information on policymaking, they can easily be swayed by interest groups. Interest groups can, therefore, successfully source their support from public opinion or not.

Public opinion remains relevant in American politics. Journalists, politicians, and political scientists should focus on getting the public’s opinion on state affairs. In as much as views might differ or change, establishing a common ground will help in policymaking (Dür, 2019). For the war in Iraq, the Democratic gained power over the senate and House. This was greatly influenced by the failure of public support that shifted the pro-Democratic in 2006 and the 2008 elections. Because opinions are not fixed, establishing a connection between public views and political outcomes might be impossible. Get Essay Writing help now

Sustainable Cities

Sustainable Cities

Sustainable Cities, Cities are the places where most of the global population lives, works and plays. Over 80% of the Canadian population and nearly 2/3 of the world’s population live in urban centres. The environment and services found in urban centres are critical to the health and well-being of urbanites. As well, the concentration of people and activities in relatively constrained geographic areas pose a considerable challenge for maintaining a healthy environment.

Cities offer the opportunity to be involved in local decision-making at a level that directly affects you. They are the most immediate and nimble level of government, where the province and especially the federal government are most difficult to access and effect change. As such, it is important to understand the factors at play in city-wide governance and how you, as an individual, can be involved. Please familiarize yourself with jurisdictional responsibilities of the city versus the province and federal government.[1] Examples of initiatives taken a the municipal level include those coordinated through ICLEI[2] (an organization that brings together local levels of government), c40 which has brought together cities to work on climate-related initiatives,[3] and the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Cities initiative.[4]

Goal

Goal of this assignment is to identify the top priorities that you want to see changed in Toronto, things that you really love about Toronto, and actions that you can take to bring about positive change in the city.

Sustainable Cities

Your Assignment

What was planned: We would have met in groups to brainstorm, starting with thinking of your own ideas and then sharing those ideas with your group to come to a consensus. This would have been an exercise in creative thinking and in working with others to arrive at a common understanding of the ideas. However, instead of a group discussion, you will either brainstorm with yourself, yourself and your cat or dog, or with a chat group, if possible.

  1. Issue Identification

First, write down ideas of what works well in Toronto. Second, write down what does not work well in Toronto.

  1. Issue Priority Setting

Consider the ideas that you have written down to arrive at,

  1. the top three things you want to change, and
  2. the top three things you (and perhaps your family and friends) love about Toronto.

Then, identify specific actions that you can take to bring about changes to help realize your top priorities for change.

Your write-up must be a maximum of one page. Marks will be deducted for responses longer than one page.

Your write-up will consist of:

  1. Top three things that you want changed in Toronto (one sentence for each)
  2. Top three things that you like about Toronto and that do not require change (one sentence for each), and
  3. Three specific actions that you can take to bring about the change prioritized in (a). You must:

–  provide three specific actions that address issues identified in (a), that must be feasible, and that you believe can lead to change (maximum three sentences per action or nine sentences total),

– for each action you must include to whom the action is directed and why; examples include other members of your community, a citizen’s group, city council, the province and if so, which ministry (one sentence each),

– you must explain why you chose each action to be the most likely to bring about change (maximum two sentences for each action). Get Online Writing Help Now
