Introduction and Alignment
The Advanced Organizers (AOs) serve as a source of current information for not only the student writing the AO but the other students in the class. This helps the student completing the assignment to succinctly summarize complex evaluation and management information. It also helps the rest of the students to gain information and insight into commonly seen primary care conditions.
Upon successful completion of this assignment you will be able to:
1. Manage clients experiencing acute and chronic disease states related to abdominal and renal complaints using evidenced-based standards of practice.
2. Develop strategies to provide holistic healthcare with clients with disorders of related to abdominal and renal complaints, recognizing the patient or designee as a full partner in decision-making.
3. Critique use of advanced technical skills in care of the client with abdominal and renal disease states required for the advanced practice nurse.
4. Apply evidenced-based health promotion practices for patients with abdominal and renal disease states into the care of clients.
5. Collaborate within the interprofessional healthcare team in caring for patients with abdominal and renal disease states.
6. Design client management plans for clients with abdominal and renal disease states that include appropriate community resources.
7. Address ethical-legal issues relevant to client and provider systems related to abdominal and renal disease management

1. Discuss evaluation and management of gross hematuria in the adult
2. Discuss evaluation and management of microscopic hematuria in the child

9. Discuss nausea/vomiting in the adult or child. Talk about acute, chronic and intermittent N/V. Focus on diagnosis rather than treatment.
10. Many parents bring their infants to the clinic with complaint of vomiting. Compare and contrast two common causes of vomiting in the infant, including differentials. Include presentation, exam, treatment and educational needs.
11. Dehydration happens frequently in children. How would a child present? How would you diagnose and treat this? How would you decide how much fluid a child would need to re-hydrate? When would a child need to be sent to the ER for dehydration?
12. Diarrhea is a common complaint in pediatrics. Discuss 3 common differentials seen with pediatric diarrhea. Look at the presenting factors, physical exam, possible testing, treatment, and education needed
13. Discuss evaluation and treatment of possible appendicitis from a primary care outpatient perspective
14. Discuss kidney stones, including presenting symptoms, diagnostic criteria, differential diagnoses, treatment modalities, prognosis, potential complications, patient education etc. Include the different types of stones, and prevention of recurrent stones by type of stone
15. Discuss renal insufficiency and renal failure, including presenting symptoms, diagnostic criteria, differential diagnoses, treatment modalities, prognosis, potential complications, patient education etc.

Instructions
1. Go to the Doc Sharing menu tab (top row) to find your assigned Group Room: Student Advanced Questions. One question will be answered in the corresponding workshop week.
2. Comprehensively answer Question #2 as assigned by faculty. Comprehensive means that the reader would know how to treat that condition based on the information in the AO. If the topic is too broad to achieve that objective, then give an overview and focus on one or more smaller portions of the topic in detail. If you have questions about how to focus the AO, email your course faculty and they can make suggestions. If you still cannot include what the reader would need to know to manage that patient, even with narrowing the topic, then explain what else a primary care provider would need to know, referrals they would need to make, additional resources they need to access in order to be prepared to diagnose and manage that condition. The focus of the AO is on practical, clinically relevant information a primary care provider needs to treat the condition.
3. The paper should be two to three pages in length, depending on the topic.
4. A minimum of three references must be used, and one of those references must be a research study or EBP guideline. While Epocrates and Lexicomp are good point of care sources, they are not intended as in-depth references, and should not be your primary source for this paper. Your pathophysiology text can also be a good adjunct, but should also not be your primary reference. Your textbooks for this course can be your primary source, and should be at least one of your sources.
5. Save a copy of your paper for yourself and submit a copy to your instructor via the Dropbox by the end of the workshop.
6. Submit a copy of this paper to 2.5 Advanced Organizer Discussion by the end of the workshop.
