Brief introduction to module
This module will help you understand the background to managing people as resources in respect of careers, recruitment and employability. By gaining knowledge of why employers use the techniques and processes they do to attract and recruit the right people for their organisations you will be able to apply it to your own future management practice as well as to your own applications for graduate jobs. We will guide you through typical recruitment practices for graduate jobs from the perspective of a recruiter and an applicant. It is very practical and much of the learning arises from in-class activities, many of which simulate actual recruitment exercises. An important part of the module is developing your networking skills among fellow students from different cultures and building your confidence in communicating with others. It is very important that you attend all lectures and seminars as each session will address a different aspect of your expected learning outcomes.
Learning outcomes assessed within this piece of work Knowledge outcome – Develop understanding of how to effectively manage people’s as well as your own employability and careers in organisations Intellectual /transferable skills outcome – You will be able to: (a) analyse own strengths and weaknesses in relation to organisational employment opportunities and becoming business ready; (b) apply mindfulness of yourself and others in order to operate effectively and sensitively within cross-cultural teams and (c) to present the findings of an investigation in a professional manner through a variety of media in an acceptable format

Instructions for assessment

Formative Assessment(Deadline 4/12/2020 before 14:00pm) Link is provided on the Moodle.

As we are suspending face to face teaching  we offer a different formative – that will scaffold the summative.

Submit a writtten answer (up to 300 words) to the following questions:

  • Create a News letter to promote equality and diversity in the work place ( Please refer to week 3 and 4 lecture slides for references).

Due to the current situation that is happening around the world regarding discrimination , the students are required to know about Equality and Diveristy in the workplace . This assessment will enable the students to come up with innovative ways to promote equality and diversity in their workplace. This session is compulsory. You will receive feedback on the above mentioned section from your tutor and it is not a part of your summative assessment.

It is important that you attend ALL seminars, but it is particularly important that you attend the relevant seminars feeding directly into your assessment. Failing to attend will affect your final mark.

Summative Assessment

For your final assessment you will be asked to submit a portfolio containing the components listed below which will be based around a given fictitious job vacancy. You will have a choice of 3 job vacancies, which will be given to you in week 5-6 of teaching. The job vacancies will be fictitious, but based on suitable vacancies available at the time.

The purpose of this is to enable you to put your learning immediately into practice in a current and meaningful way. During the seminars leading up to week 9-10 you will be practising the skills you will need on other, similar, vacancies. Marking will be according to the mark scheme included in this document and full details will be shared and discussed during seminars.

All components must be combined in one document.

Reflective account
Your reflective account will need to addresses the question ‘How Business Ready Are You Currently?’   Produce a reflective account of how you have developed two Business Readiness Competencies whilst studying this this module.  Draw on examples from seminar activities and/or part-time work experience as evidence of how you have been proactively developing your Business Readiness. You should demonstrate the application of Kolb, or Gibb’s Reflective Learning Cycle in your reflective account.  
You will need to choose 2 from the following skills:   •       Effective communication •       Business etiquette •       Interpersonal skills •       Presentation skills •       Time Management

NOTE RE FORMATTING

There is no specified format for your cover letter or your CV. How you structure these is up to you and will form part of the assessment criteria. We suggest you create each component as a separate document with appropriate formatting then cut and paste to combine it into one document. You may need to re-adjust the formatting for each component once it has been transferred to the final document. Please practise this in good time for submission as the quality of your formatting will contribute to your final mark.

How will we support you with your assessment?

  • By including exercise-based seminars designed to help you practise the skills you will need to be successful in the assessment
  • Formative feedback as described above (under Formative Assessment)
  • All lectures will contain information you need and all seminar work is practical and should be directly applicable to your assessment
  • There are no previous examples of work available for this module because it is new. However, where possible and appropriate, we will provide you with worked examples of the required components of the summative assessment.

How will your work be assessed?

Your work will be assessed by a subject expert who will use the marking rubric provided on Moodle. When you access your marked work it is important that you reflect on the feedback so that you can use it to improve future assignments.

Referencing

Academic research is not required for this module, however, where you an external source has informed your work (perhaps in your reflection notes) you MUST acknowledge it and use the Harvard System to reference it.

Assignment submissions

The Business School requires a digital version of all assignment submissions. Assessments must be submitted via Turnitin on the module’s Moodle site. They should be submitted as a Word file (not as a pdf) and should not include any scanned in text or text boxes. Assignment submissions should be submitted by 2pm on the given hand-in date. Marking and feedback process

Between you handing in your work and then receiving your feedback and marks within 20 days, there are a number of quality assurance processes that we go through to ensure that students receive marks which reflects their work. A brief summary is provided below.

  • Step One – The module and marking team meet to agree standards, expectations and how feedback will be provided.
  • Step Two – A subject expert will mark your work using the criteria provided in the assessment brief.
  • Step Three – A moderation meeting takes place where all members of the teaching and marking team will review the marking of others to confirm whether they agree with the mark and feedback. A provisional mark will then be made available through Moodle.
  • Step Four – Work at Levels 5 and 6 then goes to an external examiner who will review a sample of work to confirm that the marking between different staff is consistent and fair.
  • Stop Five – Your mark and feedback is processed by the School Office and following the Examination Board you will be informed of where to find the mark ratified by the Examination Board, plus any details about resit assessments, should you be required to complete a resit.

Resit Assignment Details

Resit submission date: TBC (Date on Moodle when known)

For students who are offered a resit you are required to improve and resubmit your original work as well as adding a further reflective commentary discussing what you have learned from the process.

You must resubmit your work using the specific resit Turnitin link on Moodle. You should:

1. Review your previously submitted work and read carefully the feedback given by the marker.

2. Use this feedback to help you revisit and rewrite your work, improving it in the areas identified as weak in the original marking process

3. Include with your resubmission an additional reflective piece (up to 300/500 words#) on what you understand was weak, how you set about addressing this and what you have learned from this that may help you with further assignments. You should address the following specifically:

i) Identify tutor feedback points on your original work and identify where/how the resit work has changed (give page number) in response to feedback

ii) Identify the lessons you have learnt from doing the resit

iii) Reflect on how your feedback and this process will help you improve future assignments

If you did not submit work at the first opportunity you cannot reflect on your feedback. However, you are still required to submit a reflective piece in which you identify your reasons for non-submission, the implications of non-submission for your future success and how you propose to address this in the future. If you have issues with confidentiality of your reasons for non-submission then you could reflect on how you have met the learning outcomes for the module, how you can use what you have done on the module to support your future career and what skills/employability attributes you feel the module has helped you to develop.

If you were deferred at the first assessment opportunity you do not need to include the reflective piece as this is a first submission at a later date, not a resit.

The original marking criteria will still apply (see marking grid provided below) except that the 10% weighting for presentation will be awarded instead to your reflective piece
