Using information from chapters 15-18 and the conclusion of The Opium War, analyze the memory and legacy of the Opium Wars in both China and Britain from the late nineteenth-century through the early 2000s. How did people in each nation remember these conflicts? How did people in each nation use, and even manipulate, the memory of the Opium Wars? And how did this memory change over time?

The online class discussion questions are designed to help you come up with ideas for your essay. Therefore, you are allowed and encouraged to use information from our online class discussions in your essay. However, while you can include ideas from online class discussions, you CANNOT simply cut and paste your answers into your essay. You must change the language you use. Failure to do so will negatively affect your essay grade.

Submission:

This paper must be submitted to Canvas by 11:59 pm. The paper must be 4-6 pages in length, double-spaced in 12 pt. Times New Roman font with one inch margins. While my preference is for everyone to use Microsoft Word, for now I am not making that a requirement. However, because I will make comments on your essay, you CANNOT use PDF. To turn in your essay, go to the Modules page and click on “The Opium War Third Essay Assignment” under Week 12. Then click on the “Submit Assignment” button that appears on the top right of the page. Click “Choose File,” double-click on your essay, and then click “Submit Assignment” towards the bottom of the page.

I have listed below the four categories I consider when grading your papers. Be sure to reference this when completing the writing assignments:

Argument:

I look for a strong, clear, and original argument that answers ALL of the question(s) asked, and is presented in your introduction.

Reading Comprehension:

I look to see if your writing demonstrates a close, careful reading of the material, and a clear understanding of its context and meaning.

Analysis:

I look to see that you offer an insightful and compelling interpretation of the evidence, that you are critically evaluating the reading(s), providing detail ed examples to support your points, and citing all information obtain ed from the document(s).

• Grammar:

I look to see that your writing is well organized and clear, and has few typos.

You must provide citations for ANY AND ALL information you use from The Opium War. Keep in mind that citations are not just for direct quotes. For example, any information you paraphrase from The Opium War (put in your own words) must be follow ed by a citation. You are require d to provide footnotes and a bibliography in Chicago style. Listed below are a few additional tips to help improve your writing:

Be sure to include an introduction, body, and conclusion.

Be sure to support all of your arguments with evidence from chapters 15-18 and the conclusion of The Opium War. Do NOT use any outside sources for your essay. If you feel the need to use an outside source, you must discuss it with me first.

A note about using direct quotes:

Only use a direct quote if Julia Lovell makes an argument that you cannot rephrase. Do NOT directly quote basic information, such as the date an historical event took place.

Do NOT use a direct quote to make an argument for you. Use a quote to support your argument. A good rule of thumb is to make your argument first and then use the quote after.

NEVER use “Throughout history” or “In my opinion.”

Be sure to proofread your paper before submitting. It can be very helpful to read your paper out loud.

Unless you are 100% certain you are using it correctly, do NOT use semicolons (;).

Include page numbers in the top or bottom right corner of your paper.
