Annotated List of References (My Business Plan) Abrams, R. M. (2003). The successful business plan: secrets & strategies. The Planning Shop. The article provides tips from venture capitalists and bankers on the appropriate strategies that a business plan must contain. It breaks down the entire business plan procedure into small steps that are easy to understand and implement. However, it does not provide any new information to the existing knowledge of business plans. It is significant for my research because it will guide me to a fundable proposal, one preferred by financial sources such as the bank. Brinckmann, J., & Kim, S. M. (2015). Why we plan: The impact of nascent entrepreneurs’ cognitive characteristics and human capital on business planning. Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, 9(2), 153-166. This paper examines the effect of behavior and attributes on business planning patterns. The research is unique and provides new data by linking entrepreneurial behavior to a business plan. It shows the impacts of the behavior behind planning, but not the planning process itself. It is important because it explains the attributes entrepreneurs and other business people should possess to plan business, including self-efficacy and perseverance successfully. WRITING AND RESEARCH 2 Chen, X. P., Yao, X., & Kotha, S. (2009). Entrepreneur passion and preparedness in business plan presentations: a persuasion analysis of venture capitalists’ funding decisions. Academy of Management Journal, 52(1), 199-214. This paper discusses the influence of entrepreneurial passion on venture capitalists’ decisions. It involves a field study to obtain first-hand statistics or results. The study sample is small and contains subjects with similar characteristics; thus, the findings are not that reliable. It is significant because it determines the factors that convince the venture capitalist to fund a business plan, such as preparedness rather than passion. Der Foo, M., Wong, P. K., & Ong, A. (2005). Do others think you have a viable business idea? Team diversity and judges’ evaluation of ideas in a business plan competition. Journal of Business Venturing, 20(3), 385-402. This article examines the impact of team diversity on evaluating their business ideas from an external party. It focuses on a team rather than an individual. It does not include gender in its demographic, factor-team diversity relationship. It is essential because it predicts venture outcomes. Honig, B., & Karlsson, T. (2004). Institutional forces and the written business plan. Journal of Management, 30(1), 29-48. The study examines the factors that lead organizations to formulate business plans. It includes the time factor in its research that occurs for two years. The findings contradict predictions from rationalists on business planning performance. It provides a detailed literature review of an effective business plan. WRITING AND RESEARCH 3 Karlsson, T., & Honig, B. (2009). Judging a business by its cover: An institutional perspective on new ventures and the business plan. Journal of Business Venturing, 24(1), 27-45. The paper emphasizes the significance of business plans and discusses the ongoing trend among organizations ignoring such plans. It shows why a business plan is a useful tool. The article fails to significantly differentiate organizations that adhere to their business plans and those that don’t. It is crucial for my research because it discusses the aftermath of a business plan. Mason, C., & Stark, M. (2004). What do investors look for in a business plan? A comparison of the investment criteria of bankers, venture capitalists, and business angels. International small business journal, 22(3), 227-248. This paper shows the different perspectives that the different sources of funding look for. It differentiates the expectations of a banker from that of a venture capitalist or any other funding body. However, it highly contradicts previous researches in the same field. It is important because it makes it easier for an entrepreneur to target a specific financial source. McKeever, M. (2016). How to write a business plan. Nolo. This book provides marketing techniques, step by step guidelines, financial projections, and business goals to include in a business plan. It is straight to the point and easy to understand. However, it is very shallow. It is important because one can determine the success or failure of forecasting the book’s cash flow. WRITING AND RESEARCH 4 McKenzie, D., & Sansone, D. (2019). Predicting entrepreneurial success is hard: Evidence from a business plan competition in Nigeria. Journal of Development Economics, 141, 102369. This paper compares the different methods of predicting the outcome of a business based on its plans. Information is obtained from varying sources. It does not recommend approaches that will effectively predict the success of a business. It is significant because it warns entrepreneurs from solely depending on a business plan for success. Mullins, J. W., & Komisar, R. (2010). A business plan? Or a journey to plan B?. MIT Sloan management review, 51(3), 1. This article encourages its audience not to stay fixated on a business plan, in case a better plan comes along the way, they should implement it as long as it leads to achieving company goals. It advocates for creativity and open-mindedness in entrepreneurs. It discourages new and small entrepreneurs. It is essential because it provides alternatives to follow when a business plan fails. WRITING AND RESEARCH 5 )A) My Research Question is: How the prophet Mohammed was living? I have divided my citations into six groups that each group describes a different part of my research. The first group consists of one citation. The first source (Yusuf, (2018). Who is the Prophet Muhammad?.) Sets out some of the fundamental information that will be used in my research. It talks about the history and the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, but it has less relevant to my research question. The second group contains four citations. Which are talks about the Prophet Muhammad family. The first source (Anonymous, (2020). Muhammad’s wives.). Takes us through the Prophet Muhammad wives’ and how many years he lived with his wife Aisha, and her death. It has a lot of valuable information but it doesn’t have enough information about the other’s wives. My second source (Anonymous, (2006). Aminah.) talks about his birthmother. It shows when she died and who raised the Prophet Mohammed when she died. But it doesn’t cover some of the most important part in his earlier life. The third source (Anonymous, (2017). The first source (Huda, (2019). Muhammad’s Life before the Call to Prophet Hood) It shows when the angel Gabriel appeared to Muhammad and called him to prophet hood. The first and only source (Payind, (2020). Islamic Expansion) talks about the Islamic Expansion with Prophet Mohammed. It shows how Islamic Expansion work this kind of information will be used in my research For example, in Egypt, Arabic, Arab cultural practices and Islam, were not forced on Egyptians by the original Arab settlers and rulers. Egyptians, however, gradually became Arabicspeaking. Advantages could be gained from speaking Arabic and participating in Arab culture; jobs in government became possible, more favourable laws, and generally access to better opportunities came with both speaking Arabic and/or converting to Islam. But has less information about the last part of the Islamic history. The fifth group contains one quote. The only source is (Waldman, (2019) Muhammad’s migration to Yathrib (Medina). ”He talks about the migration of the Prophet Muhammad to Yathrib (Medina) on the way to the emigration. The Prophet Muhammad broadcasted with his friend Abu Bakr al-Siddiq three nights in the cave of Thor, which is a cave located Between Mecca and Medina, until the request ceases from the polytheists of the people of Mecca, whose revolts erupted when they learned of the Prophet Muhammad’s survival. But it is less relevant to my research question. The sixth group contains of one citation. The only source (Timmons, (2019). Which ones are connected? Which ones are ‘outliers’? How do they support your hypothesis? Oppose it? The format: Literature Review • This section of your publish essay is to be written in continuous prose divided into paragraphs; • When you refer to one of your sources you NEED to give an in-line citation: “..(Surname, date, p. 6)”. • Double check that your in-line citation matches an entry in the List of References list at the end; • (i) A (very) brief ‘Introduction’; • (ii) “Group” [or “body”] paragraphs; • (iii) A residual ‘conclusion’ – really a transition; • See later slides; Literature Review: what do you do? • • • • • • • • You have 10 items, alphabetical (Assign 2); You have 10 ‘paragraphs’, [each item] (Assign 2); Place them in related ‘groups’ to talk about them; Ideally three [3] groups; 3 3 4; 4 3 3; 3 4 3; Mention a source: then give the in-line citation: “..(Surname, date, p. x*)”; yes, each time; 4:3:3; 6:2:2; 1:2:3:5; 4:3:2:1; 2 groups not enough; Write an approximately 500 word ‘essay’ on your source materials/items; • (1) ‘Intro’; (2) ‘group paragraphs’; (3) ‘transition’; Literature Review: Plan • How long is this section to be? Why? • You should then end up with groups or clumps or clusters of items that ‘go together’; • You can then write about these coherently and sensibly, because they belong together; Plan for Group Paragraphs • Must be done in each of the group paragraphs; • What unites these items into this group? Why have you put them all into the same group? Then review • What do they do? What do they cover? Omit? • What do they do well? Give EXAMPLES; • What do they do not so well? Give EXAMPLES; • Now tie them to your own research. How do these items relate/connect to your Thesis Statement? • How do these items further your research [writing]; Conclusion to the Literature Review • More a transition to the methodology section; • Still the beginning of the research paper, so you are opening things up, not closing them down; • This section of the Literature Review is short – very short; you do not need to summarise what you have said about each of your items; • It needs merely to show the Lit Review is ended and to transition to the next section in the research paper (the methodology); Assignment 3: Literature Review • IF you want me to look at and give feedback on a publish of your Assignment 3: Literature Review • Then upload to blackboard by • Thursday 29th October 2020 at 12:00 noon; • You have 5 (five) attempts to upload the assignment to Blackboard so you can use one or two for publishs; • You need to be working on this now so that you have things gathered together for writing; …
